How to Fertilize Hoya Plants: My Products, Schedule and Mixing Rates

There are almost as many Hoya fertilizer routines as there are Hoya growers. Some people fertilize with every watering. Others feed every other watering or once a month. Some use one-part liquid fertilizers, while others mix multi-part hydroponic nutrients, orchid fertilizer, slow-release granules, Cal-Mag, silica, or several supplements.

That does not mean fertilizing Hoyas needs to be complicated.

I grow hundreds of Hoya varieties, primarily in my homemade pon mix and self-watering tray system. My current routine is simple: I use one complete liquid fertilizer at a low rate, add Hormex as part of my nursery routine, and regularly use plain water to help limit mineral buildup.

This is exactly what I use—not a universal formula that every grower needs to copy. Your ideal Hoya fertilizer schedule will depend on your growing medium, water quality, light, temperature, root health, and how actively your plant is growing.

Quick Answer: My Current Hoya Fertilizer Routine

I mix my fertilizer in a one-gallon spray bottle. The following amounts are for one gallon of water:

My usual schedule for actively growing Hoyas is:

  • Week 1: Foliage-Pro plus Hormex
  • Week 2: Foliage-Pro plus Hormex
  • Week 3: Foliage-Pro plus Hormex
  • Week 4: Plain water

Then I repeat the cycle while the plants are actively growing.

I do not water an already-wet Hoya simply because the calendar says it is fertilizer day. “Week” describes my normal nursery schedule. At home, think of this as three fertilized watering cycles followed by one plain-water cycle, and always let the plant’s actual moisture needs determine when you water.

What Is the Best Fertilizer for Hoya Plants?

There is no single best fertilizer for every Hoya in every environment. A good Hoya plant food should supply nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, along with the secondary nutrients and micronutrients the plant needs.

For my current routine, I prefer SuperThrive Foliage-Pro. It is a complete 9-3-6 liquid fertilizer that is easy to measure, mixes readily into water, and works in both pon and potting mix. I use 1/2 teaspoon per gallon, which allows me to feed lightly and regularly rather than giving an occasional strong dose.

I do not believe Hoyas need a fertilizer labeled specifically for Hoyas. Products marketed for tropical foliage plants, orchids, or hydroponics may all work if they provide appropriate nutrition and are used at a suitable rate. The formula, concentration, water, medium, and way you manage it matter more than the picture on the bottle.

Why I No Longer Rotate Hoya Fertilizers

I previously rotated between Foliage-Pro and Tezula Plants K-Lite. When I used Tezula K-Lite, I mixed one included scoop per gallon of water. I liked how my plants grew with it, and I originally rotated formulas because they supplied nutrients in different proportions.

I no longer use K-Lite.

The reason was practical, not because it harmed my Hoyas. I bought a very large box that took more than a year to use. The granules became inconvenient to handle and began clumping and partially liquefying after absorbing moisture. Tezula itself packages smaller quantities in resealable moisture-resistant bags and specifically notes that moisture exposure can cause a frustrating loss of dry fertilizer. For my collection, liquid Foliage-Pro is simply easier.

Do You Need to Rotate Fertilizers?

No. Rotating fertilizers is optional, not a requirement for healthy Hoyas.

If one complete fertilizer works well with your water and growing medium, there is no automatic benefit to changing it. Rotating can be useful when a grower has a specific reason to compare formulas or address a known nutritional issue, but switching products without a clear reason can make it harder to identify what caused a change.

I also would not combine two complete fertilizers at their full rates in the same gallon. That can increase the total nutrient concentration and make accidental overfertilization more likely.

My Hormex Routine

Each time I make fertilized water, I add Hormex Vitamin B1 & Rooting Hormone Concentrate at 1/4 teaspoon per gallon. I use it as part of my nursery routine because I am continually rooting cuttings and growing young plants.

Hormex is not fertilizer, and it does not replace appropriate light, moisture, warmth, oxygen around the roots, or complete nutrition. It is also not something every established Hoya owner needs to add. The Hoyas I sell have already been rooted and growing for several months before they ship.

Hormex’s manufacturer lists the product for cuttings, transplants, indoor plants, hydroponics, and aeroponics. My 1/4-teaspoon-per-gallon nursery rate is deliberately light. Always check the current label because directions vary by use.

How I Mix One Gallon of Hoya Fertilizer

  1. Add most of the water to my one-gallon spray bottle.
  2. Shake the Foliage-Pro bottle, then add 1/2 teaspoon.
  3. Shake the Hormex bottle, then add 1/4 teaspoon.
  4. Add the remaining water to reach one gallon.
  5. Close the sprayer and mix the solution thoroughly.

I measure each concentrate separately and add it to water. I do not pour concentrated products together before dilution. If you substitute another fertilizer or supplement, use its current label rather than assuming my measurements transfer to it.

How Often to Fertilize Hoyas

My Hoya fertilizer schedule is light feeding for three weeks followed by plain water for one week. This works in my warm, bright nursery environment because the plants are actively growing and my homemade pon does not contain slow-release fertilizer.

Your Hoya may need less fertilizer if it is growing:

  • In lower light
  • In a cooler room
  • More slowly during winter
  • In a mix that already contains fertilizer or worm castings
  • In hard water with a high dissolved-mineral content
  • With damaged, stressed, or unhealthy roots

Your plant may tolerate more frequent light feeding if it stays warm, receives strong grow lights, has healthy roots, and produces active new growth year-round. More favorable conditions do not necessarily mean you should use a stronger solution; they may simply allow the plant to use a light nutrient solution more consistently.

The safest rule is to follow the product label, begin conservatively, and change one part of the routine at a time.

Fertilizing Hoyas in Pon

Pon is not one standardized product. That distinction matters.

My homemade pon contains pumice, lava rock, and zeolite, but no slow-release fertilizer. Because the substrate itself does not provide ongoing nutrition, I supply nutrients with diluted liquid fertilizer while the Hoyas are actively growing.

Commercial LECHUZA-PON is different. According to LECHUZA, its branded pon contains slow-release fertilizer intended to feed plants for about six months. If you are using a pre-fertilized product, do not automatically add my full routine on top of it. Follow the substrate instructions and account for what is already present.

Should You Use Organic Fertilizer in Pon?

I prefer a complete, fully soluble mineral fertilizer for Hoyas in pon, especially when the fertilizer solution will sit in a self-watering reservoir.

The fact that pon is inorganic does not make every organic product automatically unsafe. However, fish emulsion, compost tea, thick kelp products, and other organic liquids may create odor, residue, biofilm, algae, or microbial growth in a standing reservoir. They may also be more likely to leave material in wicks or narrow irrigation components.

For that reason, I do not routinely add organic fertilizer or kelp to my pon reservoirs. A product that is completely soluble and specifically labeled for hydroponic reservoirs is a different situation; follow that product’s directions and watch the system carefully.

Kelp is also usually a supplement or biostimulant, not a complete fertilizer. It should not take the place of a complete Hoya fertilizer.

Fertilizing Hoyas in Potting Mix

Potting mix needs a different approach because it may already contribute nutrients and may hold dissolved fertilizer longer than a coarse mineral substrate.

Before fertilizing, check whether the mix contains:

  • Slow-release fertilizer
  • Compost
  • Worm castings
  • Other nutrient-containing amendments

My own DIY aroid potting mix, which can also be used for Hoyas, contains worm castings. A Hoya in a nutrient-containing mix may need less supplemental fertilizer than one in my fertilizer-free pon.

When fertilizing potting mix, apply the diluted solution as part of a normal watering and allow excess water to drain. Do not add an extra watering just to keep a fertilizer schedule, and do not leave fertilizer runoff standing inside a decorative cachepot or saucer.

Fertilizing Hoyas in Self-Watering Pots

I use a self-watering tray system. My pots sit above the water on a wicking mat; they are not submerged in a deep reservoir.

For self-watering Hoyas, keep these principles in mind:

  • Use a dilute, fully soluble fertilizer.
  • Do not continually add fertilizer concentrate to an old reservoir.
  • Keep light out of the reservoir as much as possible to discourage algae.
  • Periodically refresh the water instead of endlessly topping it off.
  • Include plain-water cycles and allow discarded solution to drain away during a true flush.
  • Remember that evaporation removes water but leaves many dissolved minerals behind.

Reservoir chemistry changes as plants take up water and nutrients and as water evaporates. The University of Minnesota’s hydroponic guidance explains that water source, pH, and electrical conductivity all affect nutrient management. Most home Hoya growers do not need to turn plant care into a laboratory, but testing can be useful when persistent problems remain unexplained.

How Often to Flush Pon

I use plain water every fourth week after three weeks of light fertilizer. This reduces the amount of fertilizer continually being added, but there is a difference between a plain-water cycle and a true flush.

For a true flush:

  1. Remove or empty any old reservoir solution.
  2. Run plain water slowly through the top of the pon.
  3. Allow the water to flow freely from the drainage holes.
  4. Discard the runoff instead of allowing the pot to wick it back up.
  5. Let the pot return to its normal moisture cycle before watering again.

The fourth, plain-water week is a convenient time to do this. Flush sooner if you see a white or chalky crust, accidentally mixed fertilizer too strongly, use mineral-heavy water, or notice unexplained root stress. A large established plant in bright light may also change its reservoir chemistry faster than a small, slow-growing Hoya.

There is no single research-based monthly flushing schedule specifically for Hoyas in pon. My three-weeks-on, one-week-plain-water routine is a practical nursery system—not a rule that every home grower must follow.

Do Hoyas Need Cal-Mag, Silica, or pH Adjustments?

The grower discussions I reviewed included many people who add Cal-Mag, some who use silica, and others who use neither. That is not surprising because water sources and fertilizer formulas differ.

Foliage-Pro already contains calcium and magnesium. Adding Cal-Mag automatically may be unnecessary, particularly if your water also supplies those minerals. On the other hand, growers using reverse-osmosis water or a fertilizer that lacks calcium and magnesium may have a reason to supplement.

Do not diagnose every pale leaf or small new leaf as a Cal-Mag deficiency. Root problems, low light, overwatering, pests, temperature stress, pH, or excess fertilizer can create similar symptoms.

The same applies to pH adjustment. Some growers test every batch; others have good results with their tap water and never adjust it. If your Hoyas are healthy and growing, you may not need another task. If you have recurring nutrient problems—especially in a reservoir—testing the source water and mixed nutrient solution can help identify whether pH or dissolved-mineral concentration is contributing.

Signs of Too Much Hoya Fertilizer

Possible signs of excess fertilizer or mineral buildup include:

  • White, yellowish, or chalky crust on the pon, pot, wick, reservoir, or drainage holes
  • Brown or scorched leaf tips and edges
  • Brown or dying root tips
  • Wilting even though moisture is available
  • Stalled growth after a stronger-than-usual feeding
  • Root decline or increased susceptibility to root rot

Fertilizer salts remain behind as water evaporates. At high concentrations, they can make it harder for roots to take up water and can damage root tips. Nebraska Extension describes reduced growth, brown leaf tips, dead root tips, wilting, and visible crust as possible signs of fertilizer salt buildup.

These symptoms are not unique to overfertilization. Before deciding fertilizer is the cause, also check the roots, moisture, temperature, light, and pests.

If I suspected fertilizer buildup, I would stop feeding, thoroughly flush the medium with plain water, discard all runoff, and watch the plant before adding anything else. If the roots or medium were badly damaged, repotting into fresh substrate might be necessary.

Signs a Hoya May Need More Fertilizer

Possible signs of too little nutrition include:

  • Slower growth during otherwise favorable growing conditions
  • New leaves that are consistently smaller than expected for that variety
  • Pale foliage or a gradual loss of normal green color
  • Weak, thin new growth
  • Declining vigor in an older nutrient-free substrate

These are clues, not a diagnosis. Fertilizer cannot compensate for low light, cold conditions, damaged roots, or incorrect watering. If a Hoya is not growing, check the root system and environment before increasing the fertilizer.

Should You Fertilize a Hoya After Shipping?

Do not introduce a new or stronger fertilizer routine immediately after shipping.

A newly delivered Hoya has experienced darkness, movement, temperature changes, and a sudden change in environment. The plants I sell have already been rooted, growing, and receiving light fertilizer for several months. They are not arriving nutrient-starved.

Give the plant time to acclimate. Provide appropriate light, check whether it actually needs water, and avoid changing the fertilizer, substrate, pot, humidity, and watering routine all at once. Once it is stable and growing normally, begin your fertilizer routine conservatively.

Should You Fertilize After Repotting?

The answer depends on the plant and the new substrate.

Do not fertilize a wilted, unrooted, dormant, or root-damaged Hoya. Fertilizer supports active growth; it does not repair damaged roots. If you trimmed rot or the plant was stressed during repotting, wait until it stabilizes before feeding.

Also check whether the new mix is already fertilized. If it contains slow-release fertilizer or nutrient-rich amendments, adding liquid fertilizer immediately may be unnecessary.

When a healthy, established Hoya is moved into nutrient-free pon, introduce a dilute fertilizer routine conservatively after the plant has settled into the new setup. Avoid combining a major root disturbance with a strong feeding.

How to Adjust Hoya Fertilizer in Winter

I base fertilizer on active growth, not simply the month on the calendar.

A Hoya on a cool windowsill with short winter days may use less water and produce little new growth. Reduce the frequency or strength of fertilizer—or pause it—until active growth resumes.

A Hoya kept warm under strong grow lights may continue growing throughout winter and can continue receiving light fertilizer. Nebraska Extension likewise recommends judging winter fertilizer needs by whether the plant is actively growing, and advises against fertilizing newly repotted, unrooted, dormant, or wilted plants.

Signs that your Hoya is actively growing include new leaves, extending vines, developing peduncles, buds, or flowers. Match the fertilizer schedule to the plant you actually have, not to a generic seasonal rule.

Do Hoyas Need Bloom-Booster Fertilizer?

No. A special bloom-booster fertilizer is not necessary for most Hoyas.

Hoyas need phosphorus, but a complete fertilizer already supplies it. A large middle number on the fertilizer label does not guarantee more flowers. North Dakota State University Extension explains that high-phosphorus fertilizers do not necessarily increase flower production, and excess phosphorus can interfere with the availability of other nutrients.

Hoya flowering depends on several factors:

  • Variety
  • Plant maturity
  • Adequate light
  • Temperature
  • Root health
  • Overall growing conditions

Some Hoyas flower easily while young; others need maturity and longer vines. I focus on growing a healthy plant with adequate light and complete, lightly applied nutrition rather than trying to force blooms with a high-phosphorus product.

Once a Hoya blooms, do not remove the old peduncle. Many Hoyas flower again from the same peduncle.

What Other Hoya Growers’ Routines Show

I asked some plant friends what fertilizer routine they used for their hoyas. Their answers varied greatly.

  • Foliage-Pro was one of the most frequently mentioned products. Reported rates ranged from about 1/4 teaspoon to 1 1/4 teaspoons per gallon, with some growers using it at most waterings and others every other watering.
  • Other growers reported success with General Hydroponics Flora Series, Tezula K-Lite, Better-Gro orchid fertilizer,  and slow-release Osmocote.
  • Some regularly added Cal-Mag, silica, rooting products, or pH adjusters. Others used a single fertilizer and did not test pH.
  • Several semi-hydro growers specifically mentioned visible mineral buildup and the importance of flushing or changing reservoir solution.

These are valuable experience reports, not controlled comparisons. A Hoya growing well after a fertilizer change does not prove that fertilizer alone caused the improvement; season, light, temperature, water, and root development may have changed at the same time.

The most useful conclusion is not that everyone needs the same product. It is that a repeatable routine matched to your water, medium, and environment matters more than copying the longest ingredient list.

The Most Important Rule: Adjust the Routine to Your Plant

My current Hoya fertilizer routine is intentionally uncomplicated: 1/2 teaspoon of Foliage-Pro plus 1/4 teaspoon of Hormex per gallon, light fertilizer for three weeks, then plain water for one week.

It works with my homemade pon, self-watering trays, water, grow lights, temperatures, and actively growing nursery plants. A Hoya in a cool home, pre-fertilized potting mix, hard water, or a deep standing reservoir may need a different routine.

Start lightly. Watch the roots and new growth. Flush periodically. Make one change at a time. Consistent care will do more for a Hoya than an occasional strong dose or a complicated mixture of products.
