Hoya rotundiflora is one of the most distinctive species in the Hoya world, prized for its unusual rectangular leaves and easygoing growth habit. This rooted cutting with active new growth arrives in a 2-inch pot, ready to establish quickly in your collection. Native to Thailand, Hoya rotundiflora brings a rare architectural look that stands out among more traditional Hoyas, while rewarding growers with charming blooms and a unique foliage texture that becomes a conversation piece on any plant shelf.

  • Origin: Hoya rotundiflora is a naturally occurring species native to Thailand. Original scientific description: D. T. Phengklai, 1981. Published in Nordic Journal of Botany 1(5): 654. https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1756-1051.1981.tb00725.x

  • Leaves: Features unusually rectangular to oblong leaves that are unlike almost any other Hoya species. The leaves are stiff and somewhat succulent, helping the plant tolerate brief periods of dryness better than thinner-leaved species. Their geometric shape creates a striking, collectible appearance that adds visual interest even when the plant is not in bloom.

  • Flowers: Produces clusters of small, fuzzy, star-shaped flowers with cream to pale yellow coloring and contrasting centers. The blooms are charming and long-lasting, though fragrance, flower size, and bloom longevity can vary depending on growing conditions.

  • Growth Rate: Generally considered a moderate grower when provided with warmth, humidity, and consistent light. Active new growth can be expected during the warmer months.

  • Watering: Allow the potting mix to approach dryness before watering thoroughly. The thicker leaves store some moisture, making the plant more forgiving than many tropical houseplants while still appreciating regular hydration during active growth.

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light. For indoor growing, excellent results can be achieved when positioned approximately 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 lights for about 14 hours per day. Adequate light encourages compact growth and increases the likelihood of flowering.

  • Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm conditions around 85°F with humidity levels of approximately 70–75%. Consistent warmth and humidity support vigorous growth and healthy foliage development.

  • General Hoya Care: Use a chunky, well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, provide bright indirect light, and maintain good airflow around the plant. For detailed growing instructions, visit Hoya Care Guide.
