Hoya Soil vs. Pon: Which Growing Medium Is Better?
If you are comparing Hoya soil vs. pon, the most important question is not which growing medium is universally better. It is which one fits the way you actually water and grow your plants.
Pon can be an excellent choice for a properly designed self-watering system or for someone willing to check small pots frequently. An airy organic potting mix may be easier for someone who prefers to water thoroughly and then wait while the mix partially dries. Either medium can grow healthy Hoyas, and either can cause problems when it is paired with the wrong pot, watering routine, or growing conditions.
This comparison is about an airy Hoya potting mix and a porous mineral substrate—not dense garden soil or heavy all-purpose potting soil. Is Soil or Pon Better for Hoyas?
Neither is automatically better. Healthy Hoya roots need access to both moisture and oxygen. The best growing medium is the one that supplies both in your conditions and makes it easy for you to recognize when the plant needs water.
- Pon may suit you better if you use a true self-watering system, like being able to see moisture changes in the substrate, tend to overwater dense organic mixes, or are comfortable supplying fertilizer separately.
- An airy organic mix may suit you better if you prefer traditional top watering, want the medium to retain moisture longer between waterings, or do not want to maintain a reservoir or check a small pot of pon every day or two.
Your answer may also change with the plant and pot. A thin-leaved Hoya in a two-inch pot can dry much faster than a thick-leaved plant in a larger pot. Light, temperature, humidity, airflow, root health, and the season also affect how quickly either medium dries.
What Is Pon?
Pon is an inorganic, soil-free substrate made from porous mineral particles. My DIY pon mix contains four parts pumice, two parts lava rock, and one part zeolite. I leave out slow-release fertilizer because I fertilize my Hoyas separately.
Water drains freely through the spaces between the particles, while the porous minerals retain and move some moisture. The similar particle sizes help preserve air spaces around the roots. Wet pon normally looks darker; as it dries, it becomes lighter and more chalky-looking. That visible change, combined with the weight of the pot, can make moisture easier to evaluate.
Pon is reusable after it has been thoroughly cleaned, and it does not decompose and compact in the same way that bark and coco coir eventually do. Because it is inorganic, some pests may find it less inviting than an organic mix, but it is not pest-proof. Root mealybugs and other pests can still live around roots in pon.
What Does “Hoya Soil” Mean?
When I refer to Hoya soil or potting mix, I do not mean soil dug from the ground or a dense bagged mix that is mostly fine peat. I mean an airy blend with ingredients that retain some moisture while leaving spaces for oxygen around the roots.
My DIY aroid soil mix uses orchid bark, coco coir, pumice, activated charcoal, and worm castings. I use a finer version for two- and three-inch pots and a chunkier version for pots four inches and larger. Particle size matters because a few oversized pieces can occupy most of a tiny pot, while a mix that is too fine can settle, remain wet and limit airflow.
An airy organic mix absorbs and releases water differently than pon. Coco coir and bark hold some moisture, so the pot may not dry as quickly as a small nursery pot filled with pon outside a self-watering system. The organic ingredients will eventually break down, however, so the mix must be replaced when it becomes compacted or no longer drains properly.
Choose a Hoya Growing Medium Based on How You Water
If You Use a Self-Watering System
Pon is especially useful in a properly designed self-watering system. My nursery pots sit above a reservoir on a felt mat that moves water to the pots through capillary action. The pots are not submerged in standing water. I allow the reservoir, mat, and pots to become mostly dry before watering again, with only a little moisture remaining.
An individual self-watering pot may use a wick, a separate reservoir, or a different design. Follow the design of the planter, but do not assume its reservoir must stay full at all times. Watch how quickly the plant uses the water and check the roots and substrate while you learn how that Hoya behaves in the system. An airy organic mix can also work in some self-watering systems, but its moisture retention is less predictable because recipes and particle sizes vary. Pay close attention at first so the mix does not remain saturated.
If You Prefer Traditional Top Watering
An airy organic mix often fits a traditional watering routine well. Water thoroughly enough to moisten the entire root ball, allow excess water to drain, and empty any water that collects in a saucer or decorative outer pot. Water again when part of the mix has dried, and the pot feels noticeably lighter.
You can also top-water pon, but a small pot may dry surprisingly fast without a reservoir or wicking system. A two-inch Hoya Treasures pot removed from my self-watering setup may need water as often as every other day, depending on the plant and your conditions. Pon is not automatically the low-maintenance option if you plan to treat it like ordinary potting mix.
If You Tend to Water Too Often
Pon may be more forgiving than a dense organic mix because water passes through it quickly and air remains between the particles. That does not make overwatering impossible. A poorly designed reservoir, roots sitting in standing water, an oversized pot, or unhealthy roots can still create problems.
An airy organic mix can also work for a frequent waterer if the pot closely fits the root system and the mix contains enough porous material. If a pot remains heavy and wet for a long time, simply waiting longer between waterings may not correct the underlying problem. The plant may need a smaller pot, a more porous mix, stronger light, warmer conditions, more airflow, or an inspection of its roots.
If You Sometimes Forget to Water
A self-watering system with pon can provide more consistent access to moisture, but only if you refill it appropriately. Pon in a small nursery pot without a self-watering system is less forgiving of missed waterings because it can dry quickly.
An airy organic mix usually provides a little more time between traditional waterings because bark and coco coir retain moisture. It can be a more natural fit if you know you will not check a two-inch pot every day or two. Do not compensate by using a dense mix or an oversized pot; both can keep the roots wet for too long.
Hoya Soil vs. Pon: Other Differences to Consider
Fertilizer
Pon does not provide organic matter, and my DIY version does not include slow-release fertilizer, so I supply nutrients with liquid fertilizer. I generally fertilize with most waterings for three weeks and use plain water for one week to help flush accumulated minerals from the pon. Water quality, fertilizer strength, light, and growth rate all affect the right routine.
My organic mix contains worm castings, but plants can still benefit from an appropriate fertilizer routine during active growth. Repotting and Substrate Breakdown
Pon does not break down like bark or coco coir and can be cleaned and reused. Organic potting mix eventually decomposes, becomes finer, and may hold water longer than it did when fresh. Replace it when it has compacted or no longer drains correctly rather than repotting only because a certain number of months has passed.
Regardless of the medium, keep the pot proportional to the roots. Hoyas do not need a large amount of extra medium around a small root system. When I increase the size of a small Hoya pot, I usually go up by about one inch.
Weight, Cost and Convenience
Pon is heavier than many organic mixes, which can help stabilize a top-heavy plant but makes large pots harder to lift. It can cost more initially, although reusing it can reduce the long-term cost. An organic mix is lighter, but obtaining and mixing several consistently sized ingredients also takes time and storage space.
The most convenient choice depends on your setup. A reservoir may make caring for many plants more efficient. For a small collection, top-watering an organic mix may feel simpler than learning and maintaining a self-watering system.
What Should You Do With a New Hoya Treasures Plant in Pon?
Hoya Treasures plants are currently rooted and grown in my DIY pon mix and self-watering setup. After shipping, open the package promptly, inspect the plant, and check the moisture in the pot before adding water. Once the small pot is removed from my setup, it may dry much faster than you expect. Lift it and inspect the pon frequently; it may need water as often as every other day.
Unless there is an urgent problem such as active rot or a severely damaged pot, wait three weeks before repotting or changing the growing medium. This gives the Hoya time to recover from shipping and lets you evaluate it without stacking repotting stress on top of shipping stress.
After three weeks, you can place the plant in an appropriate self-watering system, continue top-watering the pon or repot it into an airy organic mix that better fits your routine. You do not need to pull healthy roots apart merely to remove every piece of pon. If the existing pot still fits the root system, you can reuse the same pot size.
Can You Switch a Hoya From Soil to Pon or Pon to Soil?
Yes, but a change in medium also requires a change in watering. Roots that developed in one moisture pattern may need time to adjust to another. Choose a healthy, actively growing plant when possible, use a pot that fits the root system, and avoid combining the transition with several other major changes.
After repotting, monitor the pot rather than following the old watering schedule. A plant moved from organic mix to top-watered pon may dry much faster. A plant moved from pon into an organic mix may remain moist longer. Watch the pot weight, the substrate, and the roots while the plant adjusts.
Can You Mix Pon With Hoya Soil?
Yes. Pon can be used as a mineral component in an organic potting mix. When pumice and activated charcoal are difficult to find, I sometimes replace the five parts pumice and two parts charcoal in my aroid mix with seven parts pon. This is still an organic potting mix because it also contains bark, coco coir, and worm castings; it will not behave exactly like straight pon.
Frequently Asked Questions About Hoya Soil and Pon
Can Hoyas grow in regular potting soil?
A Hoya may survive in standard potting soil, but a dense, fine mix often remains wet too long and leaves too little oxygen around the roots. I prefer an airy mix with porous ingredients and particle sizes appropriate for the pot.
Does pon prevent root rot?
No medium can guarantee that a Hoya will not develop root problems. Pon provides excellent drainage and air spaces, but roots can still decline when they remain submerged, repeatedly become extremely dry, accumulate excessive fertilizer salts or were already unhealthy.
Does a Hoya in pon need a self-watering pot?
No, but pon works especially well with a properly designed self-watering system. If you top-water a small pot of pon, expect to check it frequently because it may dry much faster than an organic mix.
Which medium is best for a beginner?
