Hoya bakoensis (Inner Variegated) Rooted Cutting Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya bakoensis is a naturally occurring species native to Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. It was formally described by botanist Michele Rodda in 2015 from plants collected in Bako National Park. In its natural habitat, it grows as an epiphyte in moist, shady heath forests. The inner-variegated form is a cultivated variation of this species, not a separate botanical species or hybrid. Read the original scientific publication in PhytoKeys.

  • Leaves: This small-leaf Hoya produces ovate to lance-shaped foliage, typically measuring approximately 2–4 cm long and 1–2.8 cm wide in the wild species. The inner-variegated form features creamy centers surrounded by green margins, giving the foliage a beautiful two-toned appearance. Young leaves may have fine surface hairs. Its petite foliage makes it especially appealing to collectors who prefer smaller-leaved Hoyas.

  • Flowers: Hoya bakoensis produces clusters of approximately 10–15 tiny, intricate flowers. Individual blooms measure about 3.5–4 mm across and feature pink petals that curve backward, surrounding a contrasting yellow and red center. Although the flowers are small, their detailed coloration makes them especially interesting to examine up close.

  • Growth Rate: Hoya bakoensis is a naturally climbing species with slender stems. Growth depends on light, warmth, humidity, and root development. Variegated plants may grow more slowly than their all-green counterparts because portions of their leaves contain less chlorophyll. Consistent growing conditions help encourage healthy new foliage.

  • Watering: Water when the potting mix has partially dried, rather than following a fixed schedule. Its small pot size means moisture levels can change quickly, especially under warm growing conditions. Use a well-draining substrate and avoid leaving the roots constantly saturated.

  • Lighting: Provide bright, indirect light to support healthy growth and attractive variegation. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense direct sunlight, which can damage the lighter portions of the leaves. Full-spectrum grow lights, such as Barrina T5 lights, can provide consistent indoor lighting when natural light is limited.

  • Temperature & Humidity: At Hoya Treasures, we grow this plant at approximately 85°F with 70–75% relative humidity. These warm, humid conditions support its tropical growing habits. Good air circulation is important, particularly in high-humidity environments. When moving your plant into different household conditions, acclimate it gradually.

  • General Hoya Care: Plant in an airy, well-draining growing medium that allows oxygen to reach the roots. Provide consistent warmth, appropriate light, and careful watering. Avoid unnecessary repotting while the cutting establishes itself in your home. For additional growing advice, visit our comprehensive Hoya Care Guide.
