Hoya Caudata (Inner Variegated) combines one of the more distinctive Hoya leaf textures with eye-catching variegation through the center of each leaf. The thick, rugged foliage can show cream, yellow and pale green inner variegation against darker green margins, while the naturally mottled surface gives every leaf even more character.

This rooted cutting arrives established with new growth in a 2-inch pot, giving collectors a head start on growing this unusual form into a larger climbing specimen.

Hoya Caudata (Inner Variegated) Rooted Cutting Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya caudata Hook.f. is an accepted species first published by Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1883. Its native range extends from southern Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra and Borneo, with a native population also documented in Singapore. It grows naturally as a climbing epiphyte in wet tropical forests. Kew currently recognizes Hoya caudata as an accepted species.

  • Foliage: Mature Hoya caudata leaves are thick, hard and leathery, with an ovate shape, narrowed tip and strongly corrugated margins. The species naturally develops silver or gray mottling, and stronger light can bring out reddish coloration. On this inner-variegated form, lighter coloration develops through the center of the leaf while darker green remains toward the edges, adding another layer of contrast to the already textured foliage. Variegation can naturally differ from leaf to leaf.

  • Flowers: Mature plants produce concave umbels containing roughly 8–15 star-shaped flowers. The flowers are approximately 1.3 cm across, with pale to white, fuzzy corolla lobes edged in long hairs and a contrasting deep reddish corona. The published Singapore account reports that individual flowers remain open for only one to two days. The scent is reported to have no detectable fragrance to a very light “clean sheets” scent.

  • Growth: This species grows as a climbing epiphyte with thin, wiry stems and produces adventitious roots along the vine that help it attach to its support. Published botanical sources describe its growth habit but do not provide a dependable indoor growth-rate classification, so growth speed will vary with light, temperature, root health, and overall growing conditions.

  • Watering: Avoid watering on a fixed calendar. Check the pot frequently and water according to how quickly the growing medium is drying; a small 2-inch pot can dry much faster than a mature plant in a larger container. Hoya caudata is associated with humid tropical habitat, while NParks describes its preference as moderate water with a moist but well-drained root zone. Allow plenty of oxygen around the roots rather than keeping the growing medium continuously saturated.

  • Light: Give it bright light indoors while acclimating gradually to stronger conditions. The species can occur in deep forest shade, but botanical observations also report that it climbs into exposed positions to flower, and foliage can turn red under very strong light. Good light also helps support compact growth and gives the variegated foliage its best presentation, but avoid suddenly moving the plant into intense direct sun.

  • Temperature & Humidity: This plant has been growing well around 75°F with approximately 60–65% humidity. That warm, moderately humid environment is consistent with Hoya caudata being a wet-tropical species native to humid lowland forests. Pair higher humidity with airflow rather than stagnant conditions around the foliage.

  • General Hoya Care: Keep the plant in a pot appropriate for its root system, use an airy and fast-draining growing medium, provide bright light, and adjust watering according to the pot and substrate rather than a fixed schedule. After shipping, start with stable temperatures and bright indirect light while the plant acclimates. See the complete Hoya Plant Care Guide for watering, lighting, fertilizing, repotting, and acclimation recommendations.

Why Customers Love It

Hoya Caudata (Inner Variegated) offers several desirable foliage traits in one plant: substantial leathery leaves, dramatic texture, natural silver mottling and contrasting center variegation. Add its unusual fuzzy star-shaped flowers and climbing habit, and it makes a distinctive choice for collectors who want a Hoya that looks interesting even when it is not in bloom.
