Hoya decipulae (Outer Variegated) is a fascinating collector's Hoya that rewards growers with ever-changing foliage and some of the most unusual flowers in the genus. This rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot is especially prized for its fleeting green-on-green variegation that appears on emerging leaves before fading as they mature. Because it is a fast-growing, thin-leaf species, there is almost always fresh growth developing, creating a constantly evolving display that keeps plant lovers checking in on it daily.
- Origin: Hoya decipulae is a species native to West Lampung, Sumatra, Indonesia. It is a naturally occurring species, not a hybrid. The species was formally described by botanists in 2001. Scientific publication: "A New Species of Hoya (Asclepiadaceae) from Sumatra" by Kleijn & Donkelaar. https://repository.naturalis.nl/pub/524561
- Leaves: Features thin, elongated green leaves that grow quickly compared to many thicker-leaf Hoyas. This Outer Variegated form displays unique green-on-green variegation on newly emerging leaves when grown under strong light. The variegation typically remains visible for one to two weeks before fading as the leaves mature, making each new growth cycle especially exciting.
- Flowers: Best known for its extraordinary blooms that resemble tiny kitchen whisks or miniature fireworks. The flowers are among the most distinctive in the Hoya world and are produced readily on mature plants. Specific fragrance, bloom size, and bloom longevity information is not well documented.
- Growth Rate: Fast-growing for a Hoya due to its thinner leaves and active growth habit. Under favorable conditions, it frequently produces new foliage, allowing growers to enjoy the temporary variegation display on fresh leaves throughout the growing season.
- Watering: Water when the potting mix is approaching dryness, but before it becomes completely dry for extended periods. Thin-leaf Hoyas generally appreciate slightly more consistent moisture than thick-leaf species.
- Light: Prefers bright indirect light. For optimal growth and to encourage the temporary variegation on new leaves, grow approximately 12 inches beneath a single Barrina T5 grow light for about 14 hours per day.
- Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Thrives at temperatures of 70–75°F (21–24°C) with 60–65% humidity.
- General Hoya Care: Plant in a well-draining mix, provide bright indirect light, avoid overwatering, and maintain good airflow. For detailed growing information, visit Hoya Care Guide.
