Hoya lacunosa 'Black Queen' is one of those plants that quietly becomes a favorite. Its compact growth, easy-going nature, and willingness to bloom make it a rewarding Hoya for both beginners and collectors.

I especially love the smaller leaves—they're large enough to create a full, attractive hanging basket surprisingly quickly, yet compact enough to fit comfortably into limited growing space.

Compared to Hoya krohniana 'Black', the leaves are longer, narrower, smoother, and less thick, giving Hoya lacunosa 'Black Queen' a distinctly elegant appearance. It's also considerably harder to find, making it a special addition to any collection.

  • Origin: Hoya lacunosa is a species native to Southeast Asia, including regions of Malaysia, Thailand, and Indonesia. Hoya lacunosa was first formally described by botanist Carl Ludwig Blume in 1826. Scientific reference: https://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/33982776

  • Leaves: Features the classic Hoya lacunosa leaf shape—long, narrow, and slightly pointed. The leaves have a smooth texture, remain relatively thin compared to Hoya krohniana, and develop deep dark coloration that gives the cultivar its "Black Queen" name.

  • Flowers: Produces clusters of small, fuzzy, star-shaped flowers that are typically creamy white to pale in color with contrasting centers. Like many lacunosa varieties, the blooms are known for their sweet, perfume-like fragrance, especially during the evening hours. Flowers can last several days and are produced readily on mature plants.

  • Growth Rate: Relatively fast-growing for a Hoya when provided bright light, warmth, and proper watering. Known for blooming more readily than many other Hoya species.

  • Watering: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between waterings. Water thoroughly when the mix is approaching dryness but avoid keeping the roots constantly wet.

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light. This plant grows well approximately 8 inches beneath a single Barrina T5 lights for about 14 hours per day.

  • Ideal Temperature: Approximately 75°F.

  • Ideal Humidity: Approximately 60–65%, though established plants can adapt to typical indoor conditions.

  • General Hoya Care: Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix, avoid overwatering, provide bright indirect light, and maintain good airflow. For detailed care instructions, visit: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
