Hoya lacunosa (Winter Pandora) is a great choice for collectors who love small-leaf Hoyas but want something much more distinctive than a standard green form. Its compact foliage combines green with silver and variegated patterning, giving each vine plenty of visual interest without taking up much space. This plant is sold as a rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot, so you can enjoy the satisfaction of watching an already-established plant develop into a fuller trailing specimen.

Hoya lacunosa (Winter Pandora) Rooted Cutting Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya lacunosa is an accepted species native to southern Myanmar through western and central Malesia, including Borneo, Java, Malaya, the Philippines, Sumatra, and Thailand. It naturally grows as an epiphyte or lithophyte in wet tropical habitats. For scientific background, see the Kew Plants of the World Online record for Hoya lacunosa and Michele Rodda's peer-reviewed 2017 treatment, which clarifies the type of Hoya lacunosa.

  • Leaves: The species has small, ovate to lance-shaped leaves that are fleshy, leathery, and slightly sunken between the veins—the "lacunose" texture that gives the species its name. ‘Winter Pandora’ adds silver and variegated patterning to that naturally compact foliage, creating a plant that offers plenty of detail even while young. Botanical descriptions place typical H. lacunosa leaves at roughly 2–5 cm long, although individual cultivated plants can vary.

  • Flowers: Mature Hoya lacunosa produces clusters of tiny, fuzzy, star-shaped flowers, generally white to cream with a contrasting central corona. Individual flowers are only about 6–7 mm across, but an umbel can contain many blooms. The species is especially prized for fragrance: scent reports vary by person, but sweet floral, honeysuckle, jasmine/gardenia-like, spicy, and cinnamon-like notes are commonly reported, with fragrance often strongest at night. Individual blooms may last up to about five days.

  • Growth Rate: Hoya lacunosa is considered a relatively fast-growing Hoya once established, with slender vines that work especially well trailing from a shelf or hanging planter. That quicker growth is a nice advantage if you enjoy watching a small rooted cutting turn into a fuller specimen rather than waiting years for noticeable progress.

  • Watering: Water when the potting mix has partially dried rather than keeping the roots continually wet. Its relatively small, fleshy leaves store some moisture, but H. lacunosa generally appreciates more consistent moisture than Hoyas with very thick, succulent leaves. A well-draining mix helps provide that balance without leaving the roots waterlogged.

  • Light: Bright, indirect light is ideal. Good light supports compact growth and helps a variegated plant show its best foliage, while harsh direct sun can scorch the leaves. A bright window or Barrina T5 lights can work well for indoor growing.

  • Temperature & humidity: This plant has done well for me around 75°F with 60–65% humidity. Those conditions also fit well within published recommendations for H. lacunosa, which favors warm temperatures and moderate-to-high humidity. Good airflow is especially helpful when humidity is elevated.

  • General Hoya care: Grow Hoya lacunosa (Winter Pandora) in an airy, fast-draining medium and avoid leaving the roots constantly saturated. Once the plant eventually flowers, leave old peduncles in place because Hoyas can rebloom from them. For more information on potting mix, watering, light, fertilizing, and long-term care, see our Caring for Hoya guide.

Why Customers Love It

‘Winter Pandora’ combines the manageable size and quicker growth of Hoya lacunosa with much more distinctive silver-variegated foliage. Add the possibility of intensely fragrant, fuzzy flowers as the plant matures, and it is an especially appealing choice for collectors who want a small-leaf Hoya that is interesting both in and out of bloom.
