Hoya lyi originates from Southern China, Laos, and Vietnam, and prefers cooler temperatures and lower lights than some hoyas. It has been an easy grower for me and does well in ambient temperatures and humidity.
It is a lithophytic species and likes to grow in the shade on limestone in nature.
The leaves have a small point on the end, they look shiny and smooth on both the top and bottom, but if you look closely, they are fuzzy on the top and bottom. They feel slightly rough. Emerging leaves come out dark. The leaves are more of a true green color and never splashy. The leaves are very thick and cannot be bent.
The plant grows very quickly and blooms easily. One of my favorite things about this plant is that it blooms easily and smells nice, although don't ask me to explain the smell. I have a terrible time describing hoya flower smells.
I like to grow mine hanging down from the pot, but that's a personal preference. It just doesn't seem like it would like a trellis since it doesn't grow that way naturally, although you could trellis it if you need the space.
