Hoya lyi is one of those plants that quietly earns a permanent place in your collection. This fast-growing species produces sturdy vines with rich green foliage and rewards even newer growers with frequent blooms.
Native to shaded limestone cliffs, it has proven to be an easy, dependable grower in my collection, thriving in typical household temperatures and humidity while blooming readily with pleasantly fragrant flowers. If you enjoy small-leaved hoyas that fill out a hanging pot quickly, Hoya lyi is an excellent choice.

Origin: Hoya lyi is native to Southern China, Laos, and Vietnam, where it grows as a lithophyte on shaded limestone outcrops. It naturally prefers cooler temperatures and lower light than many other hoya species. Leaves: Small, thick, true green leaves with a tiny pointed tip. They are smooth and glossy at first glance, but both surfaces have a fine fuzz that gives them a slightly rough texture. The leaves emerge dark before maturing to green, never develop silver splash, and are exceptionally thick and rigid—they cannot easily be bent.
Flowers: Produces clusters of attractive star-shaped flowers that bloom readily. The blooms have a pleasant fragrance and typically last about a week under good growing conditions, making this one of the easiest hoyas to enjoy in flower.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing. Hoya lyi quickly produces long vines and is one of the easier hoyas to bloom regularly.
Watering: Allow the potting mix to dry slightly between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess moisture drain away before watering again.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light but tolerates lower light better than many hoyas. In my growing conditions, I keep mine about 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 lights for approximately 14 hours per day.
Temperature: Grows best around 70-75°F, though it appreciates slightly cooler conditions than many hoyas.
Humidity: Performs well around 60-65% humidity, but has been an easy grower for me in typical indoor conditions.
Growth Habit: Naturally trails rather than climbs. I prefer growing mine in a hanging pot because it seems to match its natural growth habit, although it can be trained onto a trellis if space is limited.
