Hoya megalaster is one of Papua New Guinea's most spectacular native species, prized by collectors for producing some of the largest and most dramatic flowers in the genus.

Originally collected in Papua New Guinea and formally named by Warburg, this remarkable species has more recently been studied as part of Michele Rodda and Nadhanielle Simonsson's comprehensive revision of Papuasian Hoyas, helping clarify its place among New Guinea's incredibly diverse Hoya flora.

If you love bold foliage and unforgettable blooms, this rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot is the perfect way to grow a true botanical species that stands apart from the more common Hoyas.

Hoya megalaster Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya megalaster is a naturally occurring species native to Papua New Guinea. It was originally described by Warburg and later included in the modern taxonomic revision of Papuasian Hoyas by Michele Rodda and Nadhanielle Simonsson, whose work has greatly expanded our understanding of New Guinea's Hoya diversity. Read the scientific revision here: https://www.nparks.gov.sg/sbg/research/publications/gardens-bulletin-singapore/-/media/sbg/gardens-bulletin/gbs_69_01_y2017_v69_01/69-1-97-y2017-v69p1-gbs-pg97.pdf

  • Leaves: Thick, fleshy, elliptic leaves have a smooth, waxy surface and a substantial texture that gives the plant a lush tropical appearance while helping it retain moisture between waterings. Mature foliage develops into an impressive display even when the plant isn't in bloom.

  • Flowers: Famous for its exceptionally large umbels of glossy, deep burgundy to dark purplish-pink, star-shaped flowers that can become the centerpiece of any Hoya collection. The blooms have a light rose-like fragrance and typically remain attractive for several days.

  • Growth Rate: Moderate grower when provided with warmth, humidity, and bright light.

  • Watering: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then let excess moisture drain away.

  • Light: Prefers bright indirect light. This plant grows well approximately 12 inches beneath one Barrina T5 light for 14 hours per day.

  • Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Prefers warmer conditions than many Hoyas, with ideal temperatures around 85°F and humidity levels of 70–75%.

  • General Hoya Care: Use a well-draining mix, avoid overwatering, provide good airflow, and support climbing vines as they mature. For detailed growing instructions, visit: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
