Hoya pimenteliana (Albo / Outer Variegated) | 2-Inch

Hoya pimenteliana (Outer Variegated) is one of those Hoyas that is even prettier in person—the leaves have a silky, almost iridescent surface that seems to shimmer as you gently move the plant.

The creamy outer variegation makes that unusual foliage even more striking. This plant is also sometimes sold in the trade as Hoya cagayanensis (Albo), although botanical research supports H. pimenteliana and H. cagayanensis as distinct species. My plants have also been easy, relatively fast growers, making this a particularly rewarding variegated Hoya to grow.

• Origin: Hoya pimenteliana is a species native to the Philippines and was published by Dale Kloppenburg in 1999 in Fraterna 12(3). Kew's Plants of the World Online currently accepts Hoya pimenteliana Kloppenb. as a distinct species. This plant is sometimes sold as Hoya cagayanensis (Albo), but the names should not simply be treated as synonyms. A 2020 study comparing the leaf architecture of H. pimenteliana and H. cagayanensis found consistent differences in characteristics including leaf size and shape and finer venation patterns, supporting their treatment as two distinct species.

• Leaves: The foliage is what makes this Hoya especially memorable. Hoya pimenteliana has narrow, elongated leaves with an exceptionally fine, velvety upper surface that gives the foliage its silky, iridescent appearance. When the plant is gently moved, the leaves can appear to shimmer as the angle of the light changes. On this outer-variegated form, creamy white to pale variegation along the margins contrasts with the green center of the leaf. It is one of my favorite Hoya leaves because the unusual surface texture gives it an appearance that photos don't fully capture.

• Growth Rate: Fast-growing under favorable conditions. In my experience, it has been an easy and relatively vigorous grower compared to many collector Hoyas.

• Watering: Water when the potting mix is mostly dry but not completely bone dry. Allow excess water to drain freely and avoid keeping roots constantly wet.

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. For indoor growing, it performs well about 8 inches beneath double Barrina T5 lights for approximately 14 hours per day.

• Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Thrives around 85°F with humidity levels of 70–75%.
