Bring home the rare beauty of Hoya serpens (Silver), a stunning silver-toned form of one of the most charming miniature hoyas. This rooted cutting with new growth arrives in a 2-inch pot and is loved for its tiny, round leaves that can develop an almost completely silver appearance, creating a full, jewel-like pot of foliage.

With the right care, this unique hoya becomes a beautiful collector plant that adds texture, color, and a soft botanical look to any indoor plant collection.

Hoya serpens (Silver) Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya serpens is an accepted species first formally published by botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1883. Kew's Plants of the World Online lists its native range as the Central and Eastern Himalaya and the Andaman Islands, including Nepal, where it grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. • Leaves: Hoya serpens is prized for its exceptionally small, rounded leaves and compact foliage. The species has characteristically hairy or softly pubescent leaves rather than the smooth, glossy foliage found on many Hoyas. Hoya serpens (Silver) keeps that tiny-leaved serpens look but can develop dramatically more silver across the leaf surface. In my plants, some leaves become almost completely silver, which is especially striking once the vines fill in and create a pot covered in tiny silver leaves. Because the amount of silver can vary from leaf to leaf, each new growth point adds a little unpredictability to the plant.

  • Flowers: Hoya serpens produces clusters of small, star-shaped hoya flowers. The blooms are typically white with pink to reddish centers and are known for a sweet fragrance. Like many hoyas, flowers can last several days to weeks once open, depending on conditions.

  • Growth rate: Hoya serpens is generally considered a slower-growing hoya compared with many larger-leaf varieties. Providing consistent warmth, humidity, and bright light can encourage healthier growth and fuller vines.

  • Watering: This hoya prefers staying slightly wetter than many other hoyas. Allow the growing medium to begin drying between waterings, but avoid letting it stay completely dry for extended periods.

  • Light: Hoya serpens (Silver) enjoys bright, indirect light. This plant is grown about 8 inches from the top of the plant to double Barrina T5 lights grow lights for 14 hours per day. Adequate light helps maintain stronger growth and enhances the silver coloration.

  • Temperature and humidity: Ideal conditions are around 75°F with humidity around 60–65%. Higher humidity helps support healthy leaves and growth, especially for this small-leaf hoya.

  • General hoya care: Use a chunky, well-draining hoya mix, provide good airflow, and avoid keeping roots constantly saturated. Hoyas often prefer being slightly root-bound and can reward consistent care with beautiful vines and blooms. Learn more about hoya care here: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
