Hoya serpens (Splash) is a charming collector's plant prized for its tiny, thick leaves dusted with unpredictable silver splash. This rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot offers the excitement of watching each new leaf develop its own unique pattern, from lightly speckled to nearly solid silver. Whether displayed cascading from a hanging planter or climbing a small trellis, Hoya serpens (Splash) brings texture, character, and a touch of surprise to any indoor plant collection.
-
Origin: Hoya serpens is a naturally occurring species native to the Himalayan regions of Nepal, northeastern India, and surrounding areas. It was formally described by botanist Joseph Dalton Hooker in 1883 in The Flora of British India.
-
Leaves: Features tiny, round to slightly oval, thick succulent leaves with random silver splash variegation. No two leaves are exactly alike. Splash intensity can vary from subtle flecking to nearly solid silver, and plants may occasionally revert to greener growth. If desired, less-splashy vines can be pruned back to encourage new splashy growth.
-
Flowers: Produces clusters of fuzzy, pale green to creamy-white flowers with pink centers. The blooms are relatively small but highly attractive and are often described as having a sweet fragrance. Flowers can last for several days to weeks under favorable conditions.
-
Growth Rate: Often slow to root and establish, but once settled, it can grow surprisingly fast and naturally branches to create a fuller plant.
-
Watering: Water when the potting mix is mostly dry. Its thick leaves store moisture, making it more forgiving of occasional missed waterings than many tropical houseplants.
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light and generally tolerates lower light levels better than many hoyas. For indoor growing, place approximately 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 light for about 14 hours per day.
-
Ideal Temperature: 70–75°F. This species generally appreciates slightly cooler conditions than many other popular hoyas.
-
Ideal Humidity: 60–65% humidity supports the best growth and leaf development.
-
General Hoya Care: Use a well-draining growing medium, avoid overwatering, provide good airflow, and allow the roots to become established before increasing watering frequency. For detailed care instructions, visit https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya.
