Hoya versteegii is a true collector’s species that combines dramatic foliage with one of the most unusual flowers in the Hoya world. Offered here as a rooted cutting with new growth in a 2-inch pot, this rare climber rewards patient growers with large, fuzzy leaves, vigorous climbing behavior, and unforgettable blooms that make it a standout centerpiece in any Hoya collection.
-
Origin: Hoya versteegii is a species native to Western New Guinea (Papua), where it grows in tropical conditions. It was formally described by Simonsson & Rodda in 2017 after being known only from an early 20th-century collection. Scientific references: https://powo.science.kew.org/taxon/urn:lsid:ipni.org:names:77163099-1/general-information and https://www.ipni.org/n/77163099-1.
-
Leaves: Produces fairly large, ruffled leaves with a distinctive fuzzy texture. The foliage is noticeably pubescent (hairy), giving the plant a soft, velvety appearance that stands out even among rare Hoyas. Its climbing growth habit makes it ideal for trellises, poles, or hanging displays.
-
Flowers: Known for exceptionally unique blooms with an unusually long, funnel-shaped corolla tube, a feature rarely seen in the genus. Flowers are creamy white and highly ornamental. Growers report a strong fragrance reminiscent of Easter lilies. Blooms emerge from persistent peduncles and can become a major highlight as the plant matures.
-
Growth Rate: Moderate when provided with warmth, humidity, and strong light. Young plants may establish slowly before accelerating once rooted and actively climbing.
-
Watering: Allow the potting mix to approach dryness before watering again. Avoid keeping the roots constantly wet while maintaining consistent moisture during active growth.
-
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Our plants grow well approximately 12 inches below one Barrina T5 grow light for 14 hours per day.
-
Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Thrives in warm conditions around 85°F with 70–75% humidity. Higher humidity encourages stronger growth and flowering.
-
General Hoya Care: Use a chunky, fast-draining mix, provide bright indirect light, water when the mix is nearly dry, and avoid removing flower spurs. For detailed growing instructions, visit: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
