Hoya pubicalyx (Albo, Splash) Care & Details
Origin: Hoya pubicalyx is a species native to the Philippines. It was first formally described by botanist Rudolf Schlechter in 1905. Scientific publication: Hoya pubicalyx Schltr., published in Repertorium Specierum Novarum Regni Vegetabilis 2: 88 (1906). This variegated splash form is a cultivated selection of the species.
Leaves: Features elongated, moderately thick, succulent leaves with creamy white outer variegation along the margins and splash markings scattered across the green center of the leaf. The thick, waxy foliage helps the plant store moisture and provides ornamental appeal even when not in bloom.
Flowers: Produces clusters of star-shaped flowers with a fuzzy texture and shades of pink to deep reddish-purple. The blooms are often lightly fragrant, especially in the evening. Individual flower clusters can last for several days to a few weeks under favorable conditions.
Growth Rate: Fast-growing compared to many Hoyas and can quickly produce long vines when given bright light and proper care.
Watering: Water when the potting mix is mostly dry. Like most Hoyas, it prefers drying slightly between waterings rather than remaining constantly wet.
Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. This plant has been thriving approximately 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 lights setup for 14 hours per day. Bright light helps maintain strong variegation and encourages blooming.
Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Grows well around 85°F with approximately 72% humidity. It can adapt to typical indoor conditions but appreciates warm temperatures and elevated humidity.
General Hoya Care: Use a well-draining potting mix, avoid overwatering, and provide bright indirect light for best growth and flowering. Learn more in our complete Hoya care guide: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
