Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Silver Ghost' Rooted Cutting Care & Details

  • Origin: Hoya pubicalyx is a species native to the Philippine island of Luzon. It was formally published by American botanist Elmer D. Merrill in 1918 in the Philippine Journal of Science. Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew – Hoya pubicalyx and the International Plant Names Index (IPNI) both document Merrill's 1918 publication. 'Pink Silver Ghost' is a cultivated form of Hoya pubicalyx selected for its unusually heavy silver foliage, with some leaves becoming almost completely silver. I have not found a reliable botanical or primary-source record documenting the originator of 'Pink Silver Ghost' or establishing exactly how this selection originated, so its cultivar provenance is best considered undocumented rather than assigning it an unverified hybrid or mutation history.

  • Leaves: Thick, succulent leaves with heavy silver splash that often covers nearly the entire leaf surface, creating a striking metallic appearance while retaining the durable, easy-care nature of standard Hoya pubicalyx.

  • Flowers: Produces clusters of fuzzy, star-shaped flowers in shades of pink to deep reddish-pink with darker centers. The blooms are lightly to sweetly fragrant, especially in the evening, and individual flower clusters typically last around a week or longer under good conditions.

  • Growth rate: Fast-growing once established, making it one of the easiest Hoyas to fill out a pot or train onto a trellis.

  • Watering: Water thoroughly when the potting mix is mostly dry. Avoid allowing the plant to remain soggy.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. For indoor growing, this clone grows well approximately 12 inches below Barrina T5 lights for about 14 hours per day.

  • Ideal temperature: Thrives around 85°F but grows well in typical warm household temperatures.

  • Ideal humidity: Prefers moderate to high humidity. Around 72% humidity encourages vigorous growth, although it adapts well to average household humidity.
