The species was formally published by American botanist Elmer D. Merrill in 1918 in the Philippine Journal of Science, volume 13, page 331. This particular Hoya pubicalyx (Splash) came from a plant sold as Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Silver Ghost' that reverted to greener growth with silver splash. Because 'Pink Silver Ghost' is a horticultural selection rather than a separate botanical species, the underlying species remains Hoya pubicalyx. The reverted growth gives you the classic green-and-silver look of pubicalyx while retaining a known connection to the highly silver 'Pink Silver Ghost' plant from which it originated.
