Hoya pubicalyx (Splash) Care & Details
-
Botanical Origin: Hoya pubicalyx is an accepted species native to Luzon in the Philippines, where it occurs in wet tropical habitat as a climbing plant. The species was formally published by American botanist Elmer D. Merrill in 1918 in the Philippine Journal of Science, volume 13, page 331. This particular Hoya pubicalyx (Splash) came from a plant sold as Hoya pubicalyx 'Pink Silver Ghost' that reverted to greener growth with silver splash. Because 'Pink Silver Ghost' is a horticultural selection rather than a separate botanical species, the underlying species remains Hoya pubicalyx. The reverted growth gives you the classic green-and-silver look of pubicalyx while retaining a known connection to the highly silver 'Pink Silver Ghost' plant from which it originated.
-
Leaf Characteristics: Features elongated, lance-shaped leaves with attractive silver splash variegation scattered across the surface. Leaves are moderately thick and slightly succulent, helping the plant store moisture and tolerate occasional missed waterings.
-
Flowers: Produces clusters of star-shaped flowers with a fuzzy texture and shades ranging from pink to deep reddish-purple. Blooms are often lightly fragrant, especially in the evening. Individual flower clusters can remain attractive for up to two weeks under favorable conditions.
-
Growth Rate: Fast-growing compared to many Hoya species, producing long vines and new leaves regularly when provided with adequate light and warmth.
-
Watering: Allow the potting mix to partially dry between waterings. Water thoroughly, then allow excess moisture to drain away.
-
Light Requirements: Prefers bright, indirect light. For indoor growing, this plant thrives approximately 12 inches below a single Barrina T5 lights setup running about 14 hours per day.
-
Ideal Temperature & Humidity: Performs exceptionally well in warm conditions around 85°F with humidity near 72%, though it adapts to typical household humidity levels.
-
General Hoya Care: Use a chunky, well-draining potting mix and avoid overwatering. Provide bright light, good airflow, and support for climbing vines. For detailed growing instructions, visit: https://hoyatreasures.com/pages/caring-for-hoya
